They came back to the country with new contacts and business opportunities. The buyers highlighted their high technical quality, design and understanding of the market.

The five Colombian video-game developers and the international buyers who participated at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) agreed in saying that Colombia was a great surprise at the most important event in the world in this industry.

Before 22,500 attendees, including programmers, artists, producers, video-game designers and publishers, the Colombian companies that visited San Francisco with the support of PROCOLOMBIA, showed a variety of new projects for mobile devices, computers and consoles. The Colombian companies were ZIO Studios, Efecto Estudio, Teravisión Games, C2 Estudios and Press Start.

"I was astonished by the fact that some of the best developers came from Colombia, a country that wasn't in my radar," said Lloyd Melnick, Fiveonenine Games Executive Director.

He explained that in the past 13 years that he has been attending the event, he had not seen "surprises like what I saw from the Colombians. They showed an excellent combination of technical skill, the sense of design and understanding of the business. Colombia is one of the next destinations to consider for video-game development."

New Business

The positive answers from international buyers were translated into business opportunities and new trade contacts for Colombian entrepreneurs.

Teravision Games, for example, is already in conversations with Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, IO Interactive and DHX Media for their video-games for the web and mobile telephones. "We came as a country, as do the major players in the industry like Canada and Spain, and that is why we were the big surprise. One of the visitors interested in our work even told me that his goal at GDC was to visit Swiss studios, and ended up doing business with the Colombians," said Luis Zambrano, Operations Director.

Efecto Studios also came home with interesting business offers. "I believe we came to refresh the industry with new ideas, and that will show in the projects to be done this year," said Eivar Rojas.

Their company held 24 appointments during the three days of the event. "We have a project for PC and consoles, and five people have shown interest. Now it is just a matter of choosing."

On the other hand, Alejandro González from Zio Studios didn't doubt in saying that GDC has been "the best of all events. We reached good agreements for our games for Facebook, Social Street Soccer and Gone South."

Furthermore, they closed business deals for Vampire Season with 6L, a free application for iPhone and iPad, which will be published at the end of March.
