Colombia’s Creative Power Takes Center Stage in New York This April

Cartagena in the Greater Colombian Caribbean

With film premieres, live music, and a growing audiovisual sector, Colombia showcases its cultural and cinematic excellence while reinforcing its status as a top global production hub.

New York, NY – April 4th 2025 – This spring, Colombia’s booming creative industries are making a bold statement in New York City, showcasing the country’s exceptional talent in film, music, and storytelling. From major film premieres to a one-of-a-kind salsa celebration, Colombia’s cultural influence is on full display, reinforcing its status as a global hub for creative excellence.

At the prestigious Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY), the U.S. premiere of Matrioshka, directed by Jorge Forero, highlights the strength of Colombian cinema. This gripping film exemplifies the rich storytelling emerging from Colombia and its growing impact on international audiences.

“This premiere provides us with the opportunity to showcase Colombia, the Country of Beauty, as a leading destination for cultural tourism and a competitive hub for creative industries, including audiovisual production and technology,” said Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, the country’s promotion agency.

Colombia's audiovisual sector has experienced notable growth, with exports of audiovisual services and digital content increasing by an average of 22% over the past nine years, reflecting the industry's expanding international presence. Digital platforms such as Netflix are increasingly showcasing Colombian content, enhancing global visibility.

The country has increased its appeal as a top filming destination with the updated MAR 2024  (Resource Allocation Manual), streamlining incentives under Law 1556. Key improvements include a pre-registration system for frequent producers, increased budget flexibility, and better support for short-format productions. These updates simplify processes, reduce costs, and reinforce Colombia’s status as a premier hub for audiovisual production.

This cultural momentum continues on the global stage, as on April 30, Carnegie Hall’s Nuestros Sonidos festival will present the documentary La Salsa Vive at the SVA Theatre, exploring the profound musical ties between New York and Cali, widely recognized as the world’s salsa capital. Featuring legends like Rubén Blades, Henry Fiol, and Willie Rosario, the film will be followed by a live concert, immersing audiences in the rhythms that connect these two cultural powerhouses.

There is no doubt that Colombia’s creative exports continue to shine. With groundbreaking premieres like these, along with the success of Netflix’s adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude, the country remains a sought-after destination for audiovisual production and the creative industries. Through innovative storytelling, world-class talent, and attractive incentives, Colombia is cementing its reputation as a leading destination for international film and media.
