Over 150 exporters have attended PROCOLOMBIA and TFL’s seminars to clear their doubts and find out about the opportunities at hand with the Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and Canada.

The Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and Canada, to enter in force within the coming months, has awakened the interest of Colombian entrepreneurs who view the northern country as an opportunity to diversify their exportations.

It is absolutely clear that we have many opportunities in this market", said Esperanza Alvarado, Exports Manager for the company Sentimientos D’Pintos.

Like hers, the general opinion of over 150 exporters who have attended the seminar Export to Canada: Opportunities in the FTA with Canada for the garments sector, is the same.

“The more people can be educated, the better. That is why PROCOLOMBIA’s job is so important," said Steven Moreinis, Production Manager at Moreinis Hermanos Limitada.

The event, which was arranged by PROCOLOMBIA and the non-for profit organization Trade Facilitation Office Canada (TFO) seeks to strengthen the capacity of Colombian exporters of the garments sector and thus, to achieve a successful penetration into the Canadian market.

The seminars have already taken place in Bogota, Bucaramanga, Cali and Medellin, and will end this Wednesday in Barranquilla.

During the various sessions, exporters had the chance to hear experts on the topic, like Canadians Abbey Lipman and Raymond Thibodeau, and to get to know the details on the opportunities for the garments and fabrics sectors in the Canadian marketplace, as well as everything pertaining to the Free Trade Agreement with Canada.

Among the opportunities identified by PROCOLOMBIA for domestic exporters, which were presented during the seminars, are the entire line of teenage clothing, men’s suits, underwear, bathing suits, leather articles, and sports clothing with special treatments and technologies to allow better physical-activity performance.

However, the seminars were populated with questions on the various doubts exporters still have on the process, especially about how to offer their products successfully to over 33 million inhabitants living in Canada. "It is clear that without the Free Trade Agreement there would be nothing to talk about with Canada, because we wouldn’t be at all competitive there. But we are very interested and this type of seminars help us clear our doubts," said Luis Szapiro, Division Manager at Sajaven.
