The Colombian dairy products company, Alpina Foods LLC, will make yogurt at its first U.S.-based plant in Batavia, New York. Construction of the 28,000-square-foot manufacturing plant is set to begin in August 2011 and begin operations by May 2012 as part of this $15 million project.

The city of Batavia was chosen as the strategic location of the new plant due to its readily available milk supply, proximity to strategic markets, and the incentives package offered by state authorities.

With the objective of promoting its products, Alpina Foods LLC joined local producers last year to introduce its brand and yogurt products to the market. The new plant will continue to produce Aplina’s varieties of 100% natural, non-fat, and cereal yogurts, smoothies, and fresh cheeses, seeking to establish and strengthen the company’s brand and presence in the United States in order to facilitate growth in sales among American consumers.

According to Carlos Ramirez Zavarce, Director of Alpina Foods LLC, “the company has waited for the right time to take this determinative step in the U.S. market and has finally found the ideal location to launch this strategic objective.”

For the company’s president, Julian Jaramillo, “Alpina is a symbol of pride, not only for Colombians, but for the entire Andean Region.” On behalf of Alpina, he states: “We believe in building a new region of growth in the North American market, basing our brand in the properties of innovation, quality, nutrition, and sustainability associated with our products, and our presence in places where we already operate.”

Furthermore, this expansion reflects the growing international presence of the first Colombian-based brand to become a multinational food firm, and supports its mission to generate collective prosperity wherever it has a presence. With the support of various New York State agencies, such as the Empire State Development Corporation, the Department of Labor, the Office of Community Renewal, and the Genesee County Industrial Development Agency, Alpina will be able to work with the skilled workers of Batavia and create employment opportunities for them.

Alpina Foods LLC – U.S. Headquarters is in Miami.
