The Financial Times columnist and one of the most prestigious of his kind in the United Kingdom, visited Colombia and was marveled by the diversity of birds and nature in the country.
Harry Eyres, a journalist from the Financial Times of England, visited the Dorado Reserve and the Minca region in Santa Marta and was marveled by the diversity of birds in the region.

“Colombia is the only country where you may see 75 species of birds in only three days", said the columnist, writer and poet during his three day tour organized by PROCOLOMBIA and executed by the Ecoturs agency from the Proaves organization.

The tour began upon his arrival by ground from Cartagena to the Salamanca National Park where he met with his Proaves guide, Trevor Ellery. He began an exciting climb towards the Dorado Reserve located on the San Lorenzo Hill in the northwest area of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, stopping at Minca where they had a brief bird watching session as preamble to the visit.

That afternoon, the journalist had the chance to watch the birds in areas near the reserve’s accommodation site.

The next day, the tour moved towards the bird watching sight where the long walks at 2.700 meters of altitude did not only allow watching species like the Periquito de Santa Marta, the Atrapamoscas de Santa Marta the Green Macaw, and the Camicero Serrano, among others, but it also allowed viewing the beautiful and white snow peaks of the mountain chain.

During the second bird watching day, amidst the great variety of species seen by Harry Eyres, he stated that “Colombia has a wonderful natural richness and it is one of the countries in development that most preserves this type of resource”.

Eyres also recommended for the country to continue protecting its bird variety and continue working in its change of image perceived at an international level for the world to get to know it and feel attracted to visiting a Colombia full of natural wonders.

During the third day of his visit and on the return path, Eyres had the opportunity of watching until his arrival at Minca, where he left to the Simon Bolivar International Airport in Santa Marta.

After seeing 75 species at the end of his journey, Harry Eyres concluded that the “this adventure had been the best example of the only risk is wanting to stay".

Colombia is known at an international level as a tourist destination for bird watching. The country has 1.876 species and it is in third place in South America after Brazil and Peru.

For those who love this activity, Colombia is a paradise with countless options in the foggy forests, or the Paramo in the Andes, the Amazon and Chocó jungles, the Eastern Plains, the lowlands in the Caribbean and the inter-Andean valleys.
