It is the country with the largest number of institutions within the top 10 spots. The raking made by AméricaEconomía measures aspects of patient safety and Physician’s capacity and knowledge.

After analyzing 190 hospitals and clinics of 12 Latin American countries, the magazine AméricaEconomía selected 42 of the best in the region of which nearly half are Colombian.

From the highest rated, 20 are from Bogota, Medellin, Cali and Bucaramanga. In addition, Colombia is the country with the largest number of institutions in the top 10, four of them include: Fundacion Cardiovascular de Colombia, Fundacion Valle del Lili, Pablo Tobon Uribe Hospital and Fundacion Cardioinfantil

"It is important that not only the infrastructure of these hospitals and clinics are highlighted but also the specialization and high-complexity services that Colombia is able to offer as well as the professionalism of the medical staff, precisely all factors that are making the country the ideal medical destination for international patients, " said Maria Claudia Lacouture, president of PROCOLOMBIA.

The ranking, which takes place every year backed by surveys, interviews with physicians of participating hospitals and readers of AméricaEconomía included clinics and hospitals from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The scoring factor with the highest percentage was the safety and dignity of the patient with 25%; human capital also with 25%; capacity with 20%; and 10% knowledge management, efficiency and prestige.

"In addition to the advantages in service and infrastructure, Colombia has different development centers in smaller towns that provide health services. All this is fostering the growing arrival of foreign patients, especially from the United States, Central America and the Caribbean islands, which is where we have identified most of the expansion opportunities," said Lacouture.

According to a report by the Productive Transformation Program - in which the health sector is included because of it is world-class service - Colombia rose from receiving 14,000 international patients in 2010 to 49,000 in 2013. In the first six months of 2014 the number reached 47,000.
