The country is now ranked 34 in the world, after capturing 95 congresses and conventions in 2010.

The Spanish specialized economic press highlighted Colombia’s improvement in the world classification by the International Congress and Conventions Association in 2010 – ICCA, which lists the country as the fifth Latin American destination for congresses.

Media like Incentives & Meetings, the news bureau Europa Press, Interbusca, El Economista, La Bolsa, Empresas y Mercados, Terra and Finanzas.com, among others, registered the news of Colombia’s rise in the ICCA classification, which strengthens the country as a venue for congresses, conventions and fam trips.

“Undoubtedly, Colombia has consolidated itself as a good M&I destination. During the past two years it hasn’t stopped climbing positions in the ICCA world ranking, and now, according to the latest report by the International Congress and Conventions Association, it has climbed another three positions, moving from number 37 to number 34 in the list prepared by this important international association,” said Incentives & Meetings in its internet portal.

This measurement is the most important one in the corporate tourism industry worldwide, and it reaches over six thousand international associations which are on the constant lookout for destinations to hold their congresses and conventions.

PROCOLOMBIA focuses on the international promotion of the country as a place to hold this type of events, thus increasing the presence of foreign visitors. In 2010, the organization accomplished 14 large events and gave promotional support for another 40 associative congresses.

One of these events was the annual 4Life – International Networkers Team congress, which gathered almost seven thousand people in Bogota, coming from 64 countries including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Australia, the United States, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, among others.

The ICCA report has ranked Bogota in the 47th place, followed by Cartagena in 59th; Medellin in 129th; and finally Cali in place 309, marking its first appearance in this classification.

Colombia’s new position in the ranking was also determined by the contribution of cities like Santa Marta, San Andres and the regions of Santander and the Coffee Triangle, among the most outstanding destinations thanks to the fact that they are now equipped with the best technology and infrastructure available to host international level congresses and conventions.
