The web page highlighted Colombia is gaining international strength in the field of tourism thanks to its new hotels and international air connections.

The beaches of Santa Marta in the Colombian Caribbean were chosen by the SmarterTravel portal readers as one of the 10 most recommended destinations to visit during the summer of 2011, which also includes places like California, New Zealand, Mexico and Bali, among others

"Although it has been outside the tourism radar for some time, Colombia is now returning to the travel destination spotlight, with new hotels and air routes connecting to international destinations”, highlighted the portal in its article.

SmarterTravel.com is one of the most visited pages by travelers around the world, and part of its success lies in its impartial opinions. It is part of the TripAdvisor Media Group, which handles 18 portals dedicated to tourism promotion, with a scope of about 50 million readers.

Among other features of Colombia highlighted in the web page are over 300 beaches in the country, both in the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, and its describes Santa Marta as a “beautiful and serene city", not forgetting the advantage of being only an hour and a half away from Parque Tayrona, where tourists can enjoy the contrast of the jungle and its white beaches.

Santa Marta is one of the national destinations promoted by PROCOLOMBIA at international level. In fact, the SmarterTravel list includes a web page link in English, www.colombia.travel, which contains a review on Santa Marta.

In addition to enjoying the beaches, tourists in the capital city of Magdalena can also go scuba diving at the Neguanje Cave, Isla Aguja or Bahia Concha, hiking around the archaeological rock paths, snorkeling, camping, or staying at the Ecohabs at Cañaveral; swimming in the natural pools, bird watching, horseback riding, swimming and visiting archaeological remains, among others.

According to the 2010 report issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, which is based on DAS figures, a total of 18,128 international tourists reported upon their arrival into the country that their main destination was Santa Marta; 6.1% higher than in 2009.
