Colombian companies seek to place their brand names and products in the Mexican market

Guadalajara, Mexico. July 18th (Pxp). - Formal, casual, children's and toddler's clothing, men and women's underwear, bridal gowns and children's ceremonial outfits, jeans, imitation jewelry, footwear, leather accessories and confection materials are all part of the Colombian offering during the International Fashion Exhibition in Mexico, Intermoda 2011.

The fair, which kicks off this Tuesday in Guadalajara (Mexico), will host 27 national companies, all supported by PROCOLOMBIA.

The event, which is organized by Internacionales de la Moda at the Guadalajara fairgrounds until July 22nd, will host 700 exhibitors and around 20,500 international buyers from different countries, mainly from Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, India, Pakistan, the United States, China, South Korea, Peru, Canada, and Chile.

Most of the attending buyers are owners of specialized boutiques, regional wholesale distributors and buyers from chain and department stores and direct sales companies.

In addition to the Colombian representation by the participating companies, five national companies will be modeling on the runways, and visitors will be able to visit the Colombian exhibition stand and receive information pertaining to tourism, exports and investment.

Intermoda 2011 will be the ideal showcase, since the Mexican marketplace, the second largest in all of Latin America with its 112 million inhabitants, has proven to provide different opportunities for Colombian products.

According to the information issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, based on DANE figures, textile sector exports to that country in 2010 reached US$117.1 million, which represents 8.8% growth as compared to 2009, when the total reached US$107.7 million.

Clothing exports had the largest share with 56.4 percent, representing a growth of 6.1 percent and US$66.1 million. Nonetheless, the largest variation with respect to 2009 was in the rawhide and processed leather sector with 23.1 percent and US$4.8 million. Textiles grew by 16.9 percent, reaching US$ 36.3 million.

On the other hand, PROCOLOMBIA identified specific opportunities in Mexico for jeans wear, underwear and control garment exporters.

Moreover, it was found that Mexican consumers want creative designs, a variety of colors, combinations of fabrics and patterns with a variety of materials, and that the purchase decision is based on product design and appearance, while price plays a secondary role.

Colombia's participation at Intermoda is part of the Support Plan for exporters impacted by revaluation, the non-renewal of the ATPDEA and the heavy rainfall season of the past few months, which PROCOLOMBIA began to execute this past July 1st.

The plan encompasses over 50 promotional activities like buyer and seller fam trips, business matchmaking forums, market and marketplace information, and participation at the most important international fairs, expecting to provide support to nearly 1,200 exporting companies.
