Colombia: A Rising Powerhouse in Global Game Development

The country’s gaming industry is rapidly growing, with top studios showcasing their innovation at GDC 2025 this week.
San Francisco, March 17, 2025 – With rapid growth, a skilled workforce, and strong government incentives, Colombia is emerging as a powerhouse in the global gaming industry. At GDC 2025, ten leading Colombian game development companies, supported by ProColombia, the promotion agency of the country, will showcase their talent and innovation, reinforcing the country’s position in the international gaming market.
Alongside these companies, the Colombian Video Game Association (COVA) and the Latin American Federation of Video Games have awarded ten scholarships to Colombian developers, providing access to GDC 2025’s academic sessions, networking, and workshops. Selected for their expertise, bilingual skills, and entrepreneurial vision, these recipients represent Colombia’s top talent on the global stage.
GDC 2025, the world's largest event for game developers, takes place this week in San Francisco, California, attracting top industry professionals, publishers, and investors from North America, Asia, and Europe. Since 2012, ProColombia has facilitated the participation of over 100 Colombian game development companies, generating business expectations exceeding USD $60 million.
The Country of Beauty: A Strategic Hub for Game Development
“Colombia’s gaming industry is growing rapidly, generating $14.02 million USD in 2024 alone. With 34 game development studios across the country, we have solidified our position as a powerhouse in the sector,” says Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia.
Colombian studios excel in game development, crafting 2D and 3D graphics, animations, and gameplay mechanics, while also leading in art and illustration, producing concept art, character design, and immersive environments. The industry is also at the forefront of audio and animation, delivering high-quality sound design and fluid motion, as well as interactive content, pushing boundaries in AR/VR experiences.
With exports reaching over 150 countries and collaborations with Cartoon Network, Atari, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, MGM, Netflix, Nickelodeon, and Disney, Colombia has become a global destination for game development partnerships.
Government Incentives for International Game Companies
Colombia offers a range of incentives to attract foreign investment in its video game sector. The Audiovisual Investment Certificate (CINA) provides a 35% income tax discount for video game production in the country, while a VAT exemption on export services allows for a bimonthly refund on services provided from Colombia and used exclusively abroad. Additionally, investment and job creation incentives include a 0% tariff on imported raw materials and capital goods not produced domestically.
“Combined with a highly skilled talent pool and competitive costs, these benefits make Colombia a prime destination for video game development and co-production”, added Caballero.
