San Andres and Santa Marta, featuring Parque Nacional Tayrona and Playa Blanca, are the Colombian destinations Trip Advisor included in its annual selection of the best beaches to visit around the world.
These places made it into the list of the top 10 in South America, along with Rio de Janeiro and Punta del Este, among others.
The selection was made based on the places most recommended by millions of page readers during the past year, who publish reviews on the destinations they visit and influence other travelers' decisions made by other travelers on the places to visit.
" The chosen destinations are part of an elite group of beaches that were rated with the best opinions and votes by millions of travelers who highlighted the services and natural beauty of these places" , said the President of Trip Advisors for Business, Christine Peterson.
She added that " all those who have anything to do with the local tourism industry in these chosen beaches should feel very proud to belong to this group."
Both San Andrés and Santa Marta are part of PROCOLOMBIA' s international promotion to rank Colombia as a tourist destination.
According to the figures by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, and based on the information provided by Migración Colombia, 20,437 foreign travelers reported the destination Santa Marta in 2011, which represented an increase of 12,7% compared to the previous year, with 18,128 in total. On the other hand, San Andrés represented 2.9% of the share in 2011.
