PROCOLOMBIA participates in Biofach 2011 in Germany

It is the biggest organic product fair in the world. The mission will analyze market trends and the technology used in production to see the Colombian potential.

A mission of three Colombian entrepreneurs, led by PROCOLOMBIA will participate in Biofach 2011 the most important fair for organic products around the world which takes place in Germany.

This is the first time Colombia will participate as an exhibitor in the event where entrepreneurs will also have the chance to explore the world market of organic products, the activity of the sector, evaluate trends as well as the technology used in the production system.

Around 2600 exhibitors and almost 44 thousand professional visitors go the event.  The Colombian entrepreneurs are Doñ a Panela, Corpocampo and Coffee Company Huila.

The sector of organic products is one of the sectors that offer Colombia potential since world trends nowadays state that consumers prefer products that are environmentally friendly made and that contribute to have a healthy and ecological life style.

Organic foods, natural cosmetics and ecologic textiles are among the most striking products. They are especially attractive in the European markets which have an increasing green awareness.

Germany, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are the leading countries in consumption of organic products in Europe.

A study for Colombia conducted during the negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement with the countries that belong to Efta stated that there are only 49 thousand hectares of certified organic production, that is, 0,005% of the world production.

The same document stated that sales of organic products exceed 20 billion Euros in Europe, followed by some important markets such as the United States and Canada with 19 billion Euros, Asia two billion Euros and Latin America with only 0,8 billion Euros.

The study was funded by PROCOLOMBIA SECO (State Secretariat of Economic Affairs) and OSEC, a promotion agency from the Switzerland Government, in order to promote the Colombian agricultural offer and improve competitiviness in this sector within the European market.
