Colombia Improves its ICCA ranking position on corporate tourism

The country is now ranked number 34 in the world with 95 events captured during 2010. In Latin America, it is the fifth country with the highest number of hosted conventions. Bogota, Cartagena, Medellin and Cali are listed in the measurement by cities.

Colombia continues to move ahead in its consolidation process as an international conventions destination, placing itself in number 34 worldwide in the International Congress and Conventions Association - ICCA 2010 ranking, by achieving to capture 95 congresses in 2010.

The country moved up three positions as compared to the 2009 ranking, when it occupied 37th place with 71 events carried out during that year.

This is the most important corporate tourism measurement in the world, reaching over six thousand international associations in a constant quest for destinations for their congresses and conventions.

Colombia ranked fifth place in Latin America on the highest number of congresses and conventions which took place last year, after Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile.

PROCOLOMBIA is working towards the international promotion of the country for these events to take place in the country, thus increasing the presence of foreign visitors. The organization&rsquo s activity in 2010 achieved to bring 14 large events and the promotional support of another 40 associative congresses.

Colombia has systematically improved in this ranking. In 2006 the country was ranked number 50, with 23 events, having climbed positions year after year.

The fact that these events took place in the country generates a positive economic impact and also the possibility for high profile professionals, well acknowledged in their various segments, to get to know Colombia and come back to the country with their families and/or generate a positive word-of-mouth message on their experience in this destination.

The International Congress and Convention Association - ICCA ranking, between over 309 cities in the world, marked Bogota as the city that hosted the most congresses last year, placing it in number 47, while Cartagena was second with 59 Medellin was ranked 129 and Cali 309, entering the list for the first time.

Other cities that captured attention and added to the country&rsquo s upward trend in the congress and conventions ranking were Santa Marta, San Andres, and the regions of Santander and the Coffee Triangle, among other destinations equipped with the best technology and infrastructure to host important, world-class congresses and conventions.
