In 2011: Colombia is the second most recommended destination according to New York Times readers

Among the top 1,700 places recommended by New York Times' readers to visit or spend vacation, Colombia took second place, according to a survey carried out by the most important newspaper in the United States online.

Over 2010, the readers of the United States' most important newspaper wrote recommendations about travel destinations. Out of 31 recommended countries, Colombia was 26.

The NYT Travel section accepted readers' comments about places they recommended for vacations. Istanbul was number one with 211 recommendations, while Colombia received 149, more than Costa Rica, Seoul, Buenos Aires, Cape Town and Shanghai.

The newspaper' s readers who choose Colombia as a recommended destination, praised the country' s beautiful landscapes, beaches, the infrastructure of cities like Bogotá and Medellín, gastronomy, kind people and culture alive in every corner of the country. Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena and Santa Marta were among the recommended cities. They were classified as sophisticated, safe, cosmopolitan and have a lot of history to share with the world.

Colombia was also found in the report on destinations to visit that was published by the newspaper in January of 2010 however, at that time, it was 26 out of 31 recommended by the publication.

This recognition is even more important because it has to deal with the reader' s opinion of those that shared their experience in Colombia.

For example, Isabel, from Miami, described Colombia as a beautiful country with the best landscapes, food and people. " Everyone should travel there and experience the happiness of its people. There are so many cities to visit and they' re all gorgeous. Anyone that' s been to Colombia will tell you they liked it. The rest of the world needs to know that the only risk in Colombia is wanting to stay."

Even Americans that live in Colombia, like Sara, who lives in Medellín, recommended the country: " I' ve lived in other Latin American cities but Medellín, and Colombia in general, are different. People are nice, there are a ton of cultural activities and a variety of landscapes and climates. Colombia is a big and beautiful country we must stop believing what we read about it."

" I traveled to Colombia this summer and the entire trip was incredible. I visited Medellín, the coffee country, Cartagena and Tayrona Park.  It still feels like an adventure since not many Americans have come. Everyone was very nice and I' ll definitely return," wrote Genevieve from Boston on January 27 of last year.

Sosully of New Orleans said that " it' s rare that I travel to the same place twice, but I' ve been to Colombia four times. That' s how I recommend it. It' s a pretty, inexpensive, diverse and safe country." Bogotá, Cartagena and Tayrona Park are not to be missed according to her.
