Santander finds new export destinations

China was the destination with the largest growth in 2010. The United States is the country that most received products from this provincial department The possibilities to increase sales abroad increased after the Latin American and Caribbean Business Matchmaking Forum which took place in Bucaramanga.

The search for added value in the products and new opportunities in the international markets has been key for the strengthening of exports from the province of Santander.

According to a report by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, and on the basis of DANE&rsquo s figures, Santander&rsquo s exports increased to US$75 million in 2010.

According to this report, the people from Santander were able to find new export destinations.  China was the destination with the largest growth, registering a variation of 1,420 percent between 2009 and 2010, followed by El Salvador with 149.5 percent growth, Hong Kong with 116.3 percent and Costa Rica with 114.3 percent.

A total of 87 countries received products from this provincial department. The United States was the largest in 2010, followed by Spain, Ecuador, Switzerland and Mexico.

Bucaramanga was the host city of the Caribbean and Latin American Business Matchmaking Forum, organized by PROCOLOMBIA, with the participation of 145 international buyers from 17 countries.

The export offering from Santander was led by the manufacturing macro sector, followed by the agro-industry, garments and services sectors. Oils and greases, as well as cocoa, were the products with the highest growth during the last year, with a variation of 127,8 and 105,7 percent respectively, according to the report from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism.

Among the main products are also organic chemicals, automotive spare parts, agricultural machinery, clothing and footwear.

PROCOLOMBIA has achieved opportunities in the sale of cocoa, beef and edible remains in the agro-industrial sector, as well as cosmetics, construction materials and manufacturing auto parts leather, leather accessories, casual clothing, jeans, underwear and garments and control in clothing and other garments and BPO in the services sector.
