Free Trade Agreements open up new opportunities for Bogotá

At the Chamber of Commerce, Proexport presented the main products with potential in the various countries with which Colombia has entered into an FTA.

The realm of opportunities now facing entrepreneurs from Bogotá and its vicinities, through the Free Trade Agreements (FTA) negotiated by National Government.

The business opportunities and new markets were presented by the President of PROCOLOMBIA, Marí a Claudia Lacouture, at the forum organized by the Bogota Chamber of Commerce.

" There are Opportunities in several international markets. What we have to do now is to work on the preparation of the companies and strengthen the export offering from each region to take advantage of the situation." he said.

Entrepreneurs from Bogota receive information on the opportunities offered by the Free Trade Agreements with Mexico, Canada, Switzerland and the United States, the markets with which Colombia has entered into or will enter into custom-free agreements for its products. 

Thus, the Chamber of Commerce of Bogota and PROCOLOMBIA, entered into an agreement whereby human, economic and technical efforts by the two entities will be joined such an alliance will support entrepreneurs in every phase prior to exports.

" We have already entered into this agreement with the Barranquilla Chamber of Commerce, and will do it with the rest of the country. In every region, we are working with the Competitiveness committees, the Chambers of Commerce and the Productive Transformation Project, because the plan is to achieve enough regional force to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreements," explained Lacouture. 

According to the information from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, based on DANE figures, exports from Bogota in 2010 reached US$2,945 million, mostly including non-traditional products, which accounted for 99.9% of the total. 

These are some of the opportunities identified by PROCOLOMBIA in each of the export sectors.

Mexico

For Bogota exporters of manufacturing products, the Mexican market offers possibilities for the sale of pharmaceutical products, office and home articles, plastic and rubber, auto parts, industrial machinery, make up and cleaning products.

In the garments sector, there is potential in textiles, confections, imitation jewelry, leather accessories, footwear, rawhide and processed leather, jewelry, coats, women' s underwear, shirts and blouses.

There are possibilities in the field of services for the editorial sector.

Canada

In the agribusiness sector, Bogota has possibilities for the sale of fresh flowers, fruit, oily seeds and fruits, cocoa, and a diversity of food preparations. 

There is also large potential for the sale of auto parts, industrial machinery, tools and pharmaceutical products. 

In garments, there is a demand for textiles, confections, leather manufactures, footwear, gold work, imitation jewelry, swimwear, men and women' s underwear, control clothing and pants. 

Service entrepreneurs have opportunities to sell publishing products, paper and cardboard, musical instruments, parts and accessories.

Switzerland

In agribusiness, flowers and dried fruit, processed fruits and vegetables and animal feed.

There are opportunities in manufacturing for the sale of orthopedics devices, pharmaceutical products, artificial flowers, auto parts, organic chemical products, promotional articles and agricultural machinery. 

In garments, imitation jewelry, leather manufactures, pants and jeans wear, shirts and blouses and bathroom and kitchen wear.

United States

Exporters from Bogota have opportunities in the sale of fresh flowers, a diversity of food preparations, fish filets, bakery products and exotic fruit like ' uchuva' .

In manufactured products, some potential products are auto parts, bottles and packaging, cosmetics and cleaning products.

As for garments, there are possibilities for leather manufactured products, footwear, jeans wear, girdles and swimwear, and men and women' s underwear.

In the field of health, there is potential in the publishing sector, health services, BPO and creative industries.
