Colombia seeks to consolidate itself as an international health destination

Proexport Colombia and 10 Colombian Clinics’ representatives will be in Costa Rica to participate in the Latin American Tourism, Health and Well-being Congress.

Thanks to the fact that Colombia&rsquo s Doctors enjoy world-wide good reputation for their professionalism, forefront technology and competitive prices, and they offer their patients more agile and friendly attention, the country has become an ideal destination to foreign visitors who are looking for health services.

PROCOLOMBIA and 10 national clinics will participate at the Latin American Tourism, Health and Well-being Congress to be held in San Jose, Costa Rica from May 2nd to the 4th as part of the strategy led by the entity to foster the exporting of health services.

" The sector has had an impressive growth in Colombia" , assured Ana Maria Gonzalez Rojas, head of the department of international services from Fundació n Santa Fe. " While we currently do not have any statistics, on average we are receiving about 20 international patients a day&rdquo , she added.

The event, to be visited by over 500 people from various countries dedicated to the medical industry, mainly from the US and Canada, is the most important venue in the region to find business and do networking within the health sector.

Among other attendees are employees from the health sector, self-insured companies, medical facilitators, insurance companies, specialists and government organizations.
 
Fundació n Santa Fe, Amé ricas, Fundació n Cardio Infantil, Coomeva, Foscal, Optilá ser, San Vicente de Paul, Shaio, Cluster de Medellí n and Fundació n Cardiovascular de Colombia will be participating in representation of our country.

" We have been working on this topic for over five years, but this Congress is an important opportunity to promote the quality of the medical services offered in Colombia" , said Manuel Saavedra, Sales Director at Optilaser.

He also explained that the institution is mainly receiving patients originating from the United States and the Caribbean, but there are increasing numbers coming from Spain, Italy and Germany.

Colombia is currently acknowledged for its major developments and contributions to the medical world, such as the creation of the pacemaker (useful for certain heart diseases), the Hakim valve (to handle brain diseases) and the Malaria vaccination (a tropical disease that causes serious health problems in the region), among others.

Moreover, at Latin American level, the country has had outstanding results in past years for hosting academic events and sessions in the sector, for having the best health system according to the World Health Organization and, together with Brazil, the largest concentration of hospitals.

Colombia is also a pioneer in the region for the creation of its own health accreditation systems (a total of 16 institutions are nationally accredited and two are internationally accredited by JCI &ndash Joint Commission International).
