32 Florida and Texas supermarkets will carry Colombian food product taste samples

The activity will carry on until July 24th within the framework of the Colombian Independence, in order to further position our national brands in the United States.

Coffee, arequipe (milk caramel), yoghurt, fruit juices, arepas (corn cakes), pandebono (corn bread) and patacones (fried plantains) are just a few of the products on display at 32 supermarkets in Florida and Texas in the United States starting on July 14th until the 24th.

The taste samples will be part of the event “A taste of Colombian flavors” which, for the third year in a row, is intended to promoting national products at supermarket chains like Publix, Sedano’s and Winn-Dixie, located in the areas of most Latin and Colombian affluence in south Florida and Texas.

The sessions are organized by PROCOLOMBIA as part of the commemoration of our National Independence, which on this occasion will take place for the first time in Houston (Texas), at two stores of the Fiesta Mart supermarket chain.

Visitors at each of the 32 stores will be able to get a look at brand names like Alpina, Colcafe, Doña Arepa, Incauca, Noel, Postobon, Copelia, El Rey, JGB and Pan Guadalupe, which have already participated in this activity in past years and seek to keep positioning themselves as family products among the population.

Sample tastings will take place on June 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 and July 24 from 12:00 m to 6:00 p.m. at the participating supermarkets, where the national products will also be displayed on promotional posters and talkers.

The first tasting event took place in 2009, resulting in outstanding sales growth. Thanks to this positive impact, Publix opened its doors once again in 2010, achieving an increase of 20% in sales of the participating brands and products, with a total of 40 thousand visitors, 64 percent of which are Latin and almost US$1.5 million in sales.

Representing 28.5%, the United States was the main destination, above China, Ecuador and the Netherlands, for Colombian non-traditional exports in 2010 according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, based on DANE figures.

These were 24.3% of the total exports from the country, showing 21% growth over 2009, and achieving sales of over US$4.117 million.

PROCOLOMBIA identified several opportunities for Colombian exporters in the fields of agro-industry, especially in confections and snacks, flour and bakery.
