Colombia to increase its exports of sports products in North America

Amateur athletes and other outdoor enthusiast in the United States and Canada seek products that Colombia can offer, such as specialized apparel, snacks, dried fruit, replenishing drinks, tents, utensils, and first aid items.


In the United States alone, according to the OIA (Outdoor Industry Association), American consumers spend $887 billion annually on outdoor activities, creating 7.6 million direct jobs in the U.S. economy.

The sports and outdoor activities segment in the United States and Canada offers sales possibilities for Colombian fashion, agricultural, chemical, and manufacturing goods. ProColombia is soon to hold the first virtual business roundtable for this segment with the participation of 150 companies, including international buyers and national exporters. The roundtable takes place October 26-29.

Legal measures taken by the Colombian Government

In Decree 639 of May 8, 2020, the National Government created the Formal Employment Support Program, which was expanded by Decree 677 of May 19, 2020 under the framework of the State of Economic Emergency. This measure seeks to alleviate companies’ lack of cash flow by establishing a subsidy for the payment of salaries.

In the last week, the National Government has issued several decrees in order to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on Colombia’s economy. Among the most significant are the Formal Employment Support Program and the VAT-exempt sale of certain products.

Multimodal transport, a strategy to reactivate Colombia’s economy and competitiveness

As such, the National Government has prioritized the following investment projects in rail and river infrastructure that are included in the package of initiatives to reactivate Colombia’s economy, following the crisis caused by COVID-19.

 

Regarding railway projects, the La Dorada-Chiriguaná Corridor—a PPP that began as a public venture—stands out. This project is currently in the process of technical, legal, and financial structuring, which will conclude in October 2020 and amount to US $465 million. This public bid is expected to open in early 2021.

As part of its forecast for 2030, the new National Logistics Policy (CONPES 3982 of 2020) expects that the cargo transported by rail will increase by more than 27 million tons, while river cargo will increase by more than 9 million. The commitment to intermodal transport responds to Colombia’s need to more efficiently connect the hinterland with the ports on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Dance classes exported to the rhythm of salsa

From the west Cali neighborhood of El Cedro, bilingual teachers from El Mulato y Su Swing Latino Artistic Company give virtual salsa classes to students from 6 countries for two hours per week.

El Mulato y Su Swing Latino Artistic Company—who performed in the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show alongside JLo—decided to reinvent itself during the pandemic, offering salsa classes to students from various countries, including the United States, Mexico, and Spain. The group’s aim is to successfully enter the European and Asian market, with the support of ProColombia.

Growth continues in the cleaning and cosmetics sectors in Colombia

Across the region, companies have increased their production of all cleaning products and have benefited from the use of e-commerce and the increases in retail prices.
In Colombia, the figures before the national emergency was declared show the growth of both sectors. According to Statista, during the last week of February, sales of liquid cleaners and detergents grew by 31%, window cleaners by 29%, and laundry detergents by 28%.  As for personal hygiene products, in this same period sales of wet wipes and hand soap increased by 44% and 35% respectively.

Currently the cleaning sector in Latin America has grown, especially in disinfectant products such as bleach, while in the sector of cosmetics and personal care products, there have been more business and reinvention opportunities.

New export platform in times of COVID-19

In just one click, Colombian exporters will be able to access more than 4,800 national vehicles that operate in 25 departments and more than 1,200 routes, and cargo transporters will have the opportunity to offer their services to more than 2,500 export companies.

In partnership with the Kargorú logistics marketplace, ProColombia launched a web platform available to exporters and transportation companies to bring together the supply and demand of land vehicles.

Colombian Government legal measures during COVID-19 for the Tourism Industry

Also, Decree 457 ordered preventive isolation from 0:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25th until, the recently extended date, April 26. This Decree limits the free movement of people and vehicles, and suspends domestic air transport. It also brings a list of 34 activities exceptions that can be carried out and indicates that cargo transport, storage and logistics for import and export cargo must be guaranteed.

One of the most important decisions was the declaration of the Economic, Social and Ecological Emergency through Decree 417 of 2020, which allows the government to issue decrees with the force of a law.

Bicentennial Macro Matchmaking Forum generated 34.5 million dollars

In total, 937 buyers from 52 countries participated in the Bicentennial Macro Matchmaking Forum and had the opportunity to learn about Colombian talent, represented by 2,097 business owners from 25 departments.
 
"This event highlighted buyers’ and exporters’ confidence in Colombia in general, and specifically in ProColombia as an ally for internationalization," Santoro said, since 58% of buyers (543), as well as 796 Colombian business owners, were first-time participants.

With more than 10,000 business meetings, ProColombia clinched useful business contacts that could exceed USD 400 million, 28% more than in 2018.
